1. What is the best application technique?
All paint and stain should be applied with a brush
and roller combination. Experts agree that spraying paint or stain on most residential surfaces is not desirable. Spraying does not allow for sufficient product penetration, thus severely limiting its
longevity.

2. How important is surface preparation?
Careful surface preparation is critical to the look and
longevity of the finish. We perform all methods of preparation with proven containment procedures of tarping, tape and vacuum use. Any extensive power sanding is done with vacuum (hepa filter) attachments.
Insist on quality. A painting or staining project is only as good as its preparation!

3. How do you prepare exterior surfaces?
Washing:
All surfaces are thoroughly washed
and scrubbed with tri-sodium often by hand if necessary and followed by power rinsing. If mildew is a problem, we will use a formula of bleach and other ingredients best suited for a complete and safe cleaning.
Sufficient drying time must be allowed prior to the primer and finish coats and is determined by weather conditions.
Power washing in itself is not advised on many older homes where the surface is compromised and is at risk of damage due to the intensive water pressure. In
these cases, which are determined on a case by case basis the final cleaning method may again be a combination of hand washing followed by power rinsing. If these methods are not carefully followed and researched,
then over a short period of time peeling, bubbling and mildew problems will reoccur.
Power washing can be utilized on decks, brick, stucco and newer wood surfaces when proper drying time is allowed and
sufficient hand scrubbing is done as problem areas appear.
Scraping:
Exposed, cracked, and peeling paint on all surfaces will be thoroughly hand scraped and sanded to ensure the best possible
surface for paint adhesion. Our scraping techniques will remove all damaged paint that is not bonded. This is the single most important part of a painting-restoration project.
Sanding:
All glossy surfaces will be sanded to provide proper primer and paint adhesion. All scraped surfaces will be sanded with hand
and power equipment to further remove excess non-bonding paint and to smooth excessively rough edges.
Primer Coat:
All exposed wood that is to be painted must be primed prior to painting. We will only use a combination of oil-based primer
with a penetrol additive to ensure the best possible sealant. Penetrol will enable the primer to absorb into wood surfaces significantly more than a generic primer coat. Beware: Disreputable painting
contractors will use any number of quick dry sealers instead of primer. Even worse is if they prime unprepared surfaces, because this will lead to short term failure.
Caulking:
We use a
variety of caulking compounds which is determined by the situation. Caulk is applied to cracks or other small structural abnormalities to seal-out moisture and other climatic elements.
Glazing:
We offer complete window re-glazing services.
Other:
Plants, A/C units, lighting, and other features unique to your property will be protected from washing, scraping, and painting.

4. How do you prepare interior surfaces?
Washing
Interior surfaces where there is smoke, dirt, or staining damage will be thoroughly cleaned.
Wall & Ceiling Repair
We offer a complete repair surface. All cracks in walls & Ceilings will be scraped and repaired with fiberglass mesh and joint compound. Extensive drywall and plaster repair are our specialties.
Sanding
All surfaces to be enameled or repaired will be sanded prior to the finish coat for bonding & adhesion purposes. All patches will be
sanded to smooth. All woodwork to be enameled or painted will be thoroughly vacuumed and tac-clothed to provide a clean, debris-free surface.
Staining & Varnishing
We offer and specialize in complete staining, varnishing, and refinishing services.

5. Does the type and brand of paint really matter?
The type and manufacturer of paint play a
significant role in the look and durability of the finished project. We prefer to use Sherwin Williams, Mautz, Hallmans, Behr, or Benjamin Moore products or only the best of another line as our customers
request. We do not use “contractor grade” products. These are less expensive for the contractor, but ultimately more expensive for the customer. When the preparation is the finest, why use
less than the best finish products?

6. What role does weather play in exterior painting?
Temperature, humidity, and sunlight all
play an important role in product longevity. When doing exterior work, daily and hourly assessments of weather conditions are constantly observed. We pay special attention to these and other variables when
we undertake a project. We also use products that are specifically formulated to withstand weather and terperature surprises that may suddenly occur.

7. How can you minimize the disruption to my daily life during the project?

8. Can you help me choose a color?
We are very experienced in regard to color selection and will
be happy to help you in making color decisions. We have many examples of existing projects that reflect a wide variety of color combinations. We advise all clients to purchase a sample of the desired
colors prior to our starting. By applying a small “test area” on your structure, you can make a confident decision about the colors you are choosing.

9. Are you insured?
Peters Painting Contractors is fully insured. Property damage, public
liability, and worker’s compensation insurance has been taken out with Johnson Insurance 245-6580.
